How does the YouTube images downloader work?

A YouTube thumbnail downloader retrieves the preview images YouTube stores for a video at public addresses on i.ytimg.com. Each video has five named sizes plus three auto-captured frames, all served as ordinary JPEG or WebP files without authentication. The largest, maxresdefault, is 1280x720 and exists only for videos uploaded at 720p or higher.

  • Thumbnail addresses are built from the eleven-character video ID in any YouTube URL.
  • The five named sizes are default (120x90), mqdefault (320x180), hqdefault (480x360), sddefault (640x480) and maxresdefault (1280x720).
  • default and hqdefault are 4:3, so widescreen thumbnails are letterboxed with black bars.
  • mqdefault and maxresdefault are natively 16:9 with no bars.
  • Three additional frames are captured automatically from roughly 25, 50 and 75 percent through the video.

Every YouTube video has a set of thumbnail images stored at fixed public addresses. This tool pulls all of them at once — every size YouTube generated, in both JPEG and WebP — from any video, Shorts, live or youtu.be link. It is the cleanest thing on YouTube to save, because thumbnails are plain image files with no protection of any kind on them.

How to download from YouTube

  1. 1

    Copy the video link

Copy the address from your browser, or tap Share then Copy link in the app. Watch URLs, youtu.be short links, Shorts and live URLs all work.

  2. 2

    Paste it above

The eleven-character video ID is extracted automatically. You do not need to find it yourself or trim the URL.

  3. 3

    Pick a size and save

Every rendition YouTube actually generated is listed with its real dimensions and file size. Sizes that do not exist for a video are not shown.

What this tool does

Every size YouTube stores

All five named renditions plus the three auto-captured frames, listed in one place with real dimensions. Most tools return only maxresdefault and fail silently when it does not exist.

Tells you when maxres is missing

The 1280x720 rendition exists only for videos uploaded at 720p or higher. Rather than returning a broken image, we show you what genuinely exists and say why the largest size is absent.

Flags the 4:3 sizes

hqdefault and default are 4:3 frames, so widescreen thumbnails come with black bars. We label those rows so you do not download one by accident and have to crop it.

JPEG and WebP

YouTube keeps a WebP copy of every size, typically a quarter to a third smaller at comparable quality. Both are offered so you can choose size against compatibility.

Every YouTube URL form

Watch links, youtu.be short links, Shorts, live, embed and youtube-nocookie URLs all carry the same video ID and all resolve here.

No account, no protection to defeat

Thumbnails are public static images with no encryption or access control. Nothing about this requires a login, and we never ask for one.

How YouTube thumbnail sizes actually work

YouTube generates a fixed set of thumbnail renditions the moment a video is processed, and stores each at a predictable public address built from the video's eleven-character ID. There are five named sizes and three automatically captured frames taken from points through the video. Because the addresses are predictable and the files carry no access control, thumbnails are the one part of YouTube that can be retrieved without any ambiguity about how it is being done.

The aspect ratios are where people get caught out. default at 120x90 and hqdefault at 480x360 are 4:3, dating from when YouTube itself was 4:3. Since virtually every thumbnail today is 16:9, those two renditions letterbox the image with black bars along the top and bottom. Download hqdefault expecting a clean widescreen image and you will spend the next minute cropping. mqdefault at 320x180 and maxresdefault at 1280x720 are natively 16:9 and need no cropping at all.

maxresdefault is both the most wanted and the most often missing. YouTube creates it only when the source video was uploaded at 720p or higher, so older uploads and anything recorded on lower-resolution hardware simply do not have one. When that is the case the largest genuine rendition is sddefault at 640x480 — and no amount of processing can produce detail YouTube never generated. Tools that claim to return HD thumbnails for every video are either upscaling, which adds file size without adding detail, or returning a broken image.

One practical note for anyone collecting thumbnails for competitor research or design reference: take the WebP versions. They are typically a quarter to a third smaller than the equivalent JPEG at comparable quality, every modern browser and editor opens them, and across a few hundred thumbnails the difference in storage is substantial.

What this tool cannot do

  • maxresdefault does not exist for videos uploaded below 720p — the largest real size is then 640x480.
  • Private, unlisted-without-link and deleted videos return no thumbnail.
  • Age-restricted videos may be unavailable to our servers.
  • Custom thumbnails set after upload replace the auto-captured frames only for the named sizes.
  • This tool handles thumbnails only. Video download and audio extraction are not offered here.

Which size should you take?

The sizes are not simply scaled copies of each other — two of them change the aspect ratio.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I not get the HD thumbnail for some videos?

Because YouTube never generated one. maxresdefault at 1280x720 is created only for videos uploaded at 720p or higher. For older or lower-resolution uploads the largest genuine size is sddefault at 640x480.

Why does my downloaded thumbnail have black bars?

You took hqdefault or default. Both are 4:3 frames, so a 16:9 thumbnail is letterboxed inside them. Use maxresdefault or mqdefault, which are natively widescreen.

Do YouTube Shorts thumbnails work?

Yes. A Shorts URL contains the same eleven-character video ID as a watch URL, and thumbnail addresses are built from that ID, so Shorts, live and embed links all resolve.

What are the three extra images?

Automatically captured frames, taken from roughly a quarter, half and three quarters of the way through the video. YouTube offers these to the uploader as thumbnail options, and they remain available even after a custom thumbnail is set.

JPEG or WebP — which should I pick?

WebP for anything at volume, since it is typically a quarter to a third smaller at comparable quality and every modern browser and editor opens it. JPEG if you need compatibility with older software.

Can you download the video too?

No, and that is deliberate rather than a gap. Thumbnails are public static images with no protection on them. Video download is a different technical and legal question and is not part of this site. For personal offline viewing, YouTube Premium offers it officially inside the app.

Do you convert YouTube to MP3?

No, and we do not intend to. Courts have treated YouTube's signature cipher as a technical protection measure, which puts audio extraction in a category we stay out of deliberately. YouTube Premium provides official offline playback.

Is downloading a thumbnail legal?

Retrieving a public image involves no circumvention of anything. What you then do with it is the real question — a thumbnail is someone's creative work, so research and reference are one thing and republishing it as your own is another.

Do I need an account or extension?

Neither. Thumbnails are served publicly with no authentication, and everything here runs in your browser.

Do you store the images?

No. Files stream from YouTube's image servers directly to your device, and we keep no record of the links you submit.
