The short answer

Windows browsers save downloads to the Downloads folder in your user profile by default. Videos downloaded as MP4 with H.264 play in Windows Media Player and every major editor without conversion, which is why MP4 is the format to prefer when a choice is offered.

  • Downloads default to C:\Users\<name>\Downloads in every major browser.
  • MP4 with H.264 plays natively on Windows without additional codecs.
  • WebM and AV1 produce smaller files but older software may not open them.
  • The download location can be changed in each browser's settings.
  • Browsers can be set to ask where to save each file individually.

Downloading

1. Open the post in your browser and copy the URL from the address bar.

2. Go to the downloader page for that platform and paste the link.

3. Pick a format. On Windows, MP4 with H.264 is the safe choice — it plays everywhere without extra codecs.

4. Click the download option. The file goes to your Downloads folder.

Which format to choose

Where several formats are offered, the trade-off is compatibility against file size.

MP4 with H.264 is the most compatible option. It plays in Windows Media Player, in every video editor, and on essentially any device you might move it to. It also produces the largest files of the three.

WebM with VP9 is roughly 20 to 30 percent smaller at comparable quality. Modern browsers handle it, but some older editors and media players do not.

AV1 is smaller still, and support is the narrowest of the three. Choose it only if you know your software handles it.

Changing where files go

In Chrome or Edge, open Settings, go to Downloads, and either set a new folder or switch on the option to ask where to save each file. That second setting is genuinely useful if you are collecting media for a project — it lets you file things as you go rather than sorting a cluttered Downloads folder later.

Firefox has the same options under Settings, in the Files and Applications section.

Downloading a lot at once

Galleries and multi-image posts produce a separate file per item. Your browser may ask once whether to allow multiple downloads from the site — allow it, and the rest proceed automatically.

If you are regularly saving dozens of files, a desktop tool queues them and runs in the background without a browser tab needing to stay open, which is more reliable past roughly fifty downloads a week.

Keeping a Downloads folder that stays usable

Browser downloads all land in one folder with whatever filename the source provided, which is usually an identifier rather than anything descriptive. After a few dozen saves the folder becomes unnavigable.

The single most useful change is switching on the "ask where to save each file" option. It adds one dialog per download, but it lets you file things into project folders as you go rather than sorting hundreds of cryptically-named files later.

Sorting the Downloads folder by Date Modified rather than Name also helps considerably, since the thing you just saved is then always at the top.

If a file will not play

Windows Media Player handles H.264 in MP4 without any additional software, which covers most downloads. It is less reliable with VP9 and AV1, and will sometimes open a file to a black screen with audio playing.

VLC is the standard fix and plays essentially every format without extra codecs. Install it once and the problem stops recurring.

Avoid downloading codec packs. They were common advice years ago and are now a frequent source of bundled unwanted software. VLC does the same job without the risk.

Checking a download completed properly

A truncated download often still opens and plays, then stops abruptly partway through, which is easy to mistake for a problem with the source video.

The quickest check is file size. Compare what landed in your Downloads folder against the size the tool showed before you downloaded — if it is noticeably smaller, the transfer was interrupted and downloading again will fix it.

This happens most often on very large files over an unstable connection, and on long videos where the connection dropped briefly midway.

Common questions

Where do downloads go on Windows?

C:\Users\<your name>\Downloads by default, in every major browser. You can change this in the browser's settings.

Which format should I choose?

MP4 with H.264 unless you have a reason not to. It plays everywhere on Windows without extra codecs. WebM and AV1 are smaller but less widely supported.

The video will not open. What is wrong?

Usually a codec your player does not support. Try the MP4 H.264 option instead of WebM or AV1, or open the file in VLC, which handles all of them.

Can I make the browser ask where to save each file?

Yes. In Chrome or Edge, Settings → Downloads has a toggle for it. Firefox has the same option under Files and Applications.

How do I stop the multiple-downloads prompt?

Allow it once for the site and subsequent files proceed automatically. It exists to stop pages downloading things without your knowledge.
