The short answer

Pinterest provides no download option for video in its app or on the web, so a video pin cannot be saved directly to a camera roll. The file has to be retrieved through a browser and then moved into the photo library, which on iPhone means going through the Files app and on Android means the Download folder.

  • Pinterest has no save or download option for video pins anywhere in its interface.
  • Video pins are stored as MP4 with the audio already mixed in.
  • On iPhone, browser downloads land in Files and must be moved to Photos manually.
  • On Android, downloads go to the Download folder and are usually indexed by Gallery.
  • Idea pins are a multi-page format where each page holds separate media.

Why there is no download button

Pinterest lets you save a pin to a board, but that only bookmarks it inside Pinterest. There is no option anywhere in the app or on the website to download the underlying video file to your device.

Images are slightly better served — on desktop you can at least right-click and save, although that gives you a downscaled copy rather than the original. Video has nothing at all.

Why screen recording is the wrong approach

The obvious workaround is to record your screen while the pin plays, and it does produce a file. It is worse than a download in four separate ways.

It captures at your screen resolution rather than the resolution Pinterest stored, so a 1080p pin recorded on a phone in portrait becomes whatever your display happens to be. It includes your own interface — status bar, buttons, the Pinterest chrome around the video. It re-encodes the video a second time, compounding compression that was already applied at upload. And it takes as long as the video runs, where a download takes seconds.

You also cannot easily record just the video area, so you end up cropping afterwards, which loses more quality again.

Saving it on iPhone

1. Open the pin in the Pinterest app and tap the share icon, then Copy link.

2. Open Safari and go to the Pinterest video downloader.

3. Paste the link and choose a quality. The file size is shown before you commit.

4. Tap Download. Safari saves it to Files, not to Photos — this is normal iOS behaviour and not a failure.

5. Open the Files app, tap Browse, then On My iPhone, then Downloads.

6. Tap the video to confirm it plays with sound, then tap the Share icon and choose Save Video.

It now appears in Photos under Recents.

Saving it on Android

1. Tap the share icon on the pin and choose Copy link.

2. Open Chrome and go to the Pinterest video downloader.

3. Paste the link, choose a quality, and tap Download.

4. Confirm the download if Chrome asks.

The file goes to Internal storage, in the Download folder, and most gallery apps index it within a minute. If it does not appear, pull down to refresh, or open the Files app and look in Download directly.

Idea pins work differently

An idea pin is not a single video. It is a multi-page format closer to a story, where each page carries its own image or video clip plus any text the creator overlaid.

That means a single idea pin can produce several files rather than one. Each page has to be saved separately, and a tool that assumes one video per link will give you only the first page. If you want the whole thing, make sure every page comes back.

A note on reuse

Pinterest is largely a platform of repinned content, so the person who pinned a video is often not the person who made it. A video may have travelled through several accounts before you saw it.

Saving something for personal reference is ordinary. Using it commercially, or reposting it as your own, needs permission from whoever actually holds the rights — and on Pinterest that can be genuinely hard to trace back.

Common questions

Why does Pinterest not let me download videos?

Pinterest has simply never offered the option. Saving a pin to a board only bookmarks it within Pinterest; there is no export to your device anywhere in the interface.

Why not just screen record?

It captures at your screen resolution instead of the stored resolution, includes your interface, re-encodes the video a second time, and takes as long as the video runs. A download avoids all four.

Why does the video go to Files instead of Photos on iPhone?

Because iOS deliberately separates browser downloads from the photo library. Open Files, tap the video, tap Share, then Save Video to move it across.

Will the video have sound?

Yes. Pinterest stores video and audio together in one MP4, unlike Reddit where they are separate files and a naive download comes back silent.

Can I save every page of an idea pin?

Yes, but each page is its own file. A tool that treats the link as a single video will return only the first page.

Do pin.it links work?

Yes, and so do the country domains such as pinterest.co.uk and pinterest.de. They all point at the same pins.
